The prison (literary essay)
“The Prison” written by Bernard Malamud talks about a boy called Tomy Castelli, that he and his friends steal a liquor store. His father gets to know about this and put Tomy to work in a candy store. The essay will analyse the themes of this story which are “life as prison” and “hope for a change.”
The first theme, which is “life as prison” refers to Tomy Castelli’s life, because Tomy is forced to work there by the father of Rosa and the father of Tomy forced to get marry Rosa, because one night he and his friends steal a liquor store, his father get at know about this and obliged Tomy to get marry Rosa. “from eight in the morning to almost midnight every day, except from an hour of each afternoon.”
The second theme which is “hope for a change” refers to a little girl who visits Tomy every monday in the afternoon. This girl asks Tomy for a tissue paper and Tomy has to go to the back of the shop to take the tissue, while Tomy is looking for the tissue the little girl steals to Tomy two chocolate bars. One day Tomy see the little girl doing that, and he become surprise. So he hopes that she changes her attitude so he will tried to change her.“the girl had disappeared, but he saw a white hand reach into the candy case for a chocolate bar and for another”
This essay had explained the theme of “The Prison”, “hope for a change” and “life as prison”. In my opinion this themes are entertained because make the story entertained.
